Chapter 5-9

Dear Diary,
Yesterday it snowed for the first time in a long, long time. Scout and Jem Finch stopped by and asked if they could have my snow. I told them to take it all, it was ruining my garden. That night I set a low fire in my kitchen to keep me warm for the night. I quickly went to my bedroom and fell asleep. I woke up a few hours later and heard strange noises and there was an odd smell. I soon realized what that smell was when I looked to the door and saw smoke seeping through under the door. I grabbed my coat and ran for the door. As I ran by the kitchen to get out I saw the orange flames, bright and hot, coming closer towards me and the rest of the house. I threw the door open and went out into the freezing night. I ran to the Finch’s home and knocked very hard on the door. Someone needed to wake up.
A few moments later Atticus opened up the door looking very sleepy, “Oh, hello Miss Maudie. How can I help you?”
“Please, my house is on fire! Can you call for help?” I asked in a panicked voice. Atticus seemed more awake now; he looked over to my house and his eyes widened. He ran back inside and I heard him talking to someone over the phone. I left and ran back out in front of my house. More of the neighbors come out, and finally a few fire trucks arrived. As I watched Mr. Avery climb to safety I calmed down. I was actually sort of happy this old house is gone, I hated it. Everyone went back to bed and I stayed at Miss Stephanie’s house. In the morning Atticus told me about Boo Radley coming out to put a blanket around Scout’s shoulders. Later Jem and Scout returned a few of my belongings and they were surprised I wasn’t upset about my house. I explained why and I asked Scout about Boo Radley, I told her I wished I was there. I would have liked to see that.

  1. I am very sorry about your house. I know you don't care that it burnt down, but I am still very sorry. That night we all tried to help out, especially Mr. Avery. He is a brave man to be climbing down the porch the way he did. I tried my best to help. I noticed you wanted to see my brother. Many people would like that. He told me he only wanted to keep Scout warm. Hopefully you can see him some day.
