Dear Diary,
It has been ten years since the trial and Jem broke his arm. I am nineteen years old and I am in law school. I just started and I live on campus. I wanted to be like Atticus, who is getting pretty old and has retired. After the trial I wanted to be the one to defend a black man to the best of my ability and have him be innocent. Dill and I are dating and he visits every once in a while. He still wants to get married after all of these years. I have never been to much of a lady and never liked dresses. I didn't want to stay home and let Dill make all the money, I want to do my part. Jem got married last year and will be a father soon. When im old enough I want to marry Dill and graduate and be a lawyer exactly like Atticus. I want to have a few kids and just be a good role model like Atticus has been for Jem and I. I call Atticus a few times a week and I ask him about Boo. No body has been seen taken out so he's still in there somewhere. Dill was so jealous that summer he returned and I told him I hung out with Boo. To this day Dill still wants to see him.

The trial
Dear Diary,
Today was the trial. We were there for hours. Atticus and I sat patiently waiting for the verdict. The jury took a while to get back with their verdict. I sat and listened as the judge kept saying guilty. My heart sank lower and lower in my chest with each guilty called out. Atticus stood up quickly and whispered in my ear that we still have a chance and we can get an appeal. He tried to explain it to me but I wasn't listening. I was too shocked to understand what he was saying. I could only think about my family and saying goodbye. I cut him off and I said thank you and goodbye to Atticus. I was immediatly taken to the jail, so I had time to think. I knew i wouldn't be able to win this case, I was black and the Ewell's are white. It's not fair that every word I say I am judged. Atticus did better then any lawyer I knew, but it wasn't enough. I am an innocent man and I don't want to be in this jail cell, cut off from all humanity. i thought about all of the things I would miss. My children growing up, my wife, my friends. Who would take care of the kids and make money? I don't want these cruel people to kill me. I would rather do it myself, I would rather attemp to escape then just sit around and wait. This whole thing is completely unfair. I quickly formed a plan in my head and planned to put it into action the first chance I got.

Chapter 17-19
Dear Diary,
Today was the day of the trial, and I spent the night in the jail house. Later on when we arrived to the court house it was a full house. Atticus and I made our way up to the front of the room and we took out seats. The trial began and I listened carefully to what was said by the Ewell’s. Atticus asked me to stand so Mayella could identify me as the rapist. I wanted to shout that I was innocent, but I knew better. Everything Atticus said was proving me not guilty, but it all depends on the jury. I wait a long, long time and there was finally a break. When it was over Atticus called me up to the witness stand and I walked quickly to the stand. I panicked a little as I realized I would have to life my dead left hand on the book to do under oath. I tried I few times until Judge Taylor said, “That’ll do, Tom.” I went to the witness chair and Atticus had me tell the jury about my life. Age, family, and other things like that.
I told them about being arrested for disorderly conduct. I explained it was because a man tried to cut me when I got in a fight and we were both convicted. I was asked questions that I have been asked a million times. Atticus asked me if I have ever been invited over to the Ewell’s by Mayella and I answered honestly. Every question Atticus I answered best I could and as honestly. I was polite, trying to prove to the jury I was a kind person and I was taught to always be polite. I told Atticus and the jury what I was asked to do when Miss Mayella asked of my services. I told them everything, but I was still worried about the cross-examination.
